Our dinner the other night was one for the books. I wasn’t going to write about it, but my mom encouraged me to share.
The past few months I have been trying (keyword: “trying”) to have sit down meals for dinner; especially when Justin is home. This has been a work in progress. My son, Joe, loves to eat his meals outside and argues with me almost every evening when I enforce the “sit down” dinner. He’s usually a pretty social guy so I asked him why he doesn’t like to eat dinner with all of us. I came to discover that one of the reasons he dislikes sitting down with us is because he is disgusted by certain things he sees at the table; Sarah being the primary reason, Mary coming in a close second (for those of you who have had the pleasure of eating with my Mary you can totally understand why).
So the other night we gathered around the table and to my surprise Joe jumped right up to sit with all of us (VICTORIOUS!). He even chose a seat right across from Sarah who was chewing on a teething biscuit between the bites of purees I was feeding her. Everything was going smoothly until Sarah started gagging on a little piece of biscuit that she couldn’t seem to swallow…and then it all started to unravel.
As she continued to gag Joe started to get uncomfortable and began burying his face in his shirt while taking random peeks at Sarah to see if she was ok.
She wasn’t.
She began to gag even louder to which I decided to intervene and grab her from her highchair and slap her on her back a few times.
Now Bells and Mary were starting to look upset.
When the back slapping didn’t work I swept my finger in her mouth, trying to extract the piece of soggy biscuit, and I accidentally gagged her in the process instantly turning her into the exorcist baby. Green pureed puke spewed EVERYWHERE. Joe ran out of the room in a flash. Bella started sympathy crying and Mary (who also has a sensitive gag reflex) started to dry heave at the sight of Sarah’s freshly puked up dinner all over the floor.
It.was.chaos.
Justin and I looked at each other and all we could do was laugh. Our peaceful and successful dinner had turned to chaos in a matter of minutes. We knew then and there that dinner was no more. And he was right. It was SO over and probably not to be had again for a very long time.
